WHY PRESS TOFU?
Tofu is a blank palette waiting to absorb delicious flavors, but there are a few steps you need to do before this can happen.
Firm or extra firm tofu usually comes packed in water. Like a wet sponge, that water inside the tofu is taking up valuable space.
When you press tofu, it releases some of the soaking water making room to absorb more of the cooking flavors you want.
It also leaves you with a firmer texture.
If you’re air frying or pan frying the tofu, you will get a crispier crust since it has less moisture.

CAN YOU PRESS SILKEN TOFU?
No. Silken tofu is soft and delicate. There is no need to press silken tofu as it will crumble apart with pressure.
TOFU PRESS HACK
You can purchase a special press to do this job, but it’s easy enough to do with common items you currently have in your possession.
- paper towels or clean kitchen towels
- small cutting board
- something heavy
HOW TO PRESS TOFU
- Stack 2 or 3 pieces of folded paper towels on a rimmed plate.
- Take the tofu out of the container and give it a fresh water rinse.
- Place tofu on paper towels.
- Lay down another folded paper towel on top of the block of tofu.
- Position a small cutting board over the paper towel.
- Balance something heavy (like a can or a frying pan) on the cutting board.
- Let sit for 15-30 minutes. The longer it’s pressed, the firmer the tofu.
So your layers are:
- heavy can
- cutting board
- paper towels
- paper towels
When you’re done pressing, you can take your tofu and cube or slice it as you wish. Then, marinate it with tasty flavors.
