Our family uses the scale in the first photo: GEMINI-20 Portable Precision Digital Milligram Scale. Measuring at 3.5×4 inches, it’s small and doesn’t take much counter space at all. It’s also perfect for travel. It easily converts between ounces, grams, troy ounces, pennyweights, carats, and grains.

The second photo of the Digital Pocket Scale is also quite popular amongst those that do OIT. It measures at 3×5 inches and has a nice flip lid. This scale has a stainless steel surface that’s easy to to clean. You can place your items directly on the surface or place in a container before measuring.

So which is better? They both work, it’s really up to your preference.

WHERE DO I GET AN OIT SCALE?

Some allergists provide the scale for you.

If not, some will recommend that you purchase it for yourself. These are difficult to find in stores, so online is your best resource.

What container do I put my OIT dose in?

It’s important to find a container that is super lightweight as these scales measure in high precision and cannot handle a heavy bowl.

Lightweight container options

If you’re fine with washing and reusing a container for dosing, the mini silicone cupcake molds have worked well for us.  These come in a rainbow of colors, so that might be fun for your child too.

If you prefer something disposable, the mini soufflé plastic cups will be ideal. Depending on the amount of your dose, get a size that works for you.

If your allergist provides pre-measured doses to you, they are likely in mini soufflé plastic cups already.

ORAL IMMUNOTHERAPY FOR FOOD ALLERGY

WHAT IS OIT?
Food Allergy Oral immunotherapy (OIT) refers to the medically supervised therapy of feeding an allergic individual an increasing amount of an allergen with the goal of increasing the threshold that triggers a reaction.

The goal of therapy is to raise the threshold that may trigger a reaction and provide the allergic individual protection against accidental ingestion of the allergen. OIT is not a curative therapy and involves a long-term commitment over several months to years and possibly indefinitely. Individuals who receive OIT will continue to carry epinephrine, read labels closely, etc., and it is not expected that OIT will lead to ingestion of the allergen without limitation. (Definition from AAAAI.)

Remember, OIT treatment should only be performed under the supervision of a board-certified allergist.
