OIT GRADUATE

An OIT graduate is someone who has finished the buildup phase of their oral immunotherapy treatment for a specific allergen, such as peanuts. Even though a finish line has been reached, graduates continue on a maintenance dose to keep up their resistance. This may change as new research continues.
But first, if you don’t know what OIT is, read the OIT definition below in the teal titled box.
OIT GRADUATE
Depending on your goal and your provider, some people will treat one allergen at a time, while others prefer to do multiple. For example, a graduate may have completed OIT for peanut while still building up in milk.
Note that some allergists will offer multiple allergen OIT, whereas others only do single allergen OIT.
CELEBRATE OIT GRADUATION
An OIT graduation is an important and momentous occasion. It’s the perfect time to celebrate the huge accomplishment for both the child and family as a whole.
It’s important to realize that OIT is quite a bumpy journey for the parents and child. Reaching this milestone requires tremendous mental energy for the many up-dose appointments and the daily dosing at home.
Consequently, creating a memorable OIT graduation is worth the effort!
CLEAR FOR CROSS CONTAMINATION
When you graduate from OIT, you are clear for cross contamination for that particular allergen.
So go out and enjoy your new freedom! You’ve earned it!
OIT GRADUATE T-SHIRT
Get dressed for the occasion!
What better way to show how proud you are, than to wear it! Tell the world about your accomplishment on your shirt.
OIT CELEBRATION IDEAS
Depending on your allergen, go out to eat somewhere that cross-contamination had previously made unsafe.
If dairy is acceptable, visit an ice cream shop if peanut, tree nut, wheat, and seed cross-contamination can now be tolerated.
Buy some cupcakes or muffins with the label “Made in a facility with ____your OIT allergen___”.
Celebrate with a store bought cake.
Have a graduation party.
Let your child choose any toy he wants from the store.
Take a vacation and fly in an airplane.

ORAL IMMUNOTHERAPY FOR FOOD ALLERGY
The goal of therapy is to raise the threshold that may trigger a reaction and provide the allergic individual protection against accidental ingestion of the allergen. OIT is not a curative therapy and involves a long-term commitment over several months to years and possibly indefinitely. Individuals who receive OIT will continue to carry epinephrine, read labels closely, etc., and it is not expected that OIT will lead to ingestion of the allergen without limitation. (Definition from AAAAI.)

Remember, OIT treatment should only be performed under the supervision of a board-certified allergist.
