SECRET WEAPON

I thank my thermal food jar every time it makes perfectly cooked oatmeal for me. It makes mornings so much easier! After years of eating quick oats when I was told steel cut oats would require a long cook time, I now laugh! This method is even faster than cooking quick oats on the stove in the morning.

All you have to do is: Fill the food jar with steel cut oats and boiling water at night. When you open it in the morning, the contents is about 140°F. If you like it hotter, pour it into a bowl and microwave it for 1 minute to get it to about 170°F. Then stir in any optional add-ins you wish (like cinnamon – there’s a whole list below) to make the perfect no cook oatmeal for you.

It really can’t get any easier! I recommend the Zojirushi 16.9 oz Food Jar for making this oatmeal. After 6 hours in the food jar, the steel cut oats turn out perfectly cooked. The oatmeal is deliciously creamy and chewy.

The Zojirushi 16.9 oz Food Jar holds the heat in for a long time, keeping food super hot for many hours. I’ve tried various brands of food jars and this one consistently outperforms the others. It comes in shiny pink (pictured), silver/black, and aqua blue. This food jar is great for kids to bring their hot lunch to school. We have 2 of them and use them for school lunch about 3 days a week. My daughter loves the shimmery pink and my son has the silver and black one. The 16.9 oz size is perfect for a child about 10-15 years old. There’s also a smaller version which holds 11.8 oz that is great for a younger child.

HOT STEEL CUT OATS

Make sure you use regular Steel Cut Oats, not the quick cook variety. The quick cook variety will turn out mushier vs. chewier. I like chewier. It’s got more body!

Here’s a photo of my breakfast this morning: Steel cut oats with blueberries and ground flaxseed. The blueberries add some fruity sweetness and the flaxseed adds omega-3 fat, protein, and a nutty taste. It’s perfect to get your morning off to the right start!
